Roof Blisters: Causes, Solutions and Prevention

Roof Blisters

Different roofing problems arise with weather changes.  We have discussed in the previous blog that moisture or condensation problems are more common during cold seasons especially winter.  We have also shared how both autumn and winter cause leaking problems.  Well, summer is fast approaching and we’d like to talk about one of the challenges this season brings to your roof, blistering.

What causes Roof Blisters?

We all know what blisters are. But how do they occur on roofs? Blisters are pockets of air or moisture trapped under layers of roofing materials. Some of its causes are insufficient ventilation, poor installation, and at some instances, they are just brought about by shingles’ manufacturing defects.

As the roof is exposed to the sun’s heat, the moisture on these bubbles tend to rise, expanding the roof’s membrane.  Although small blisters may initially appear to be harmless, do not be deceived for they would eventually lead to bigger roof problems.  How? Once the membrane of your roof has stretched, continuous exposure to heat would only cause these pockets to stretch even more and when the pressure becomes too great, these layers would eventually crack.

How to Fix Them

It is wise to act fast as soon as you see the appearance of blisters on your roof because they not only degrade the beauty and value of your home, but they reduce the lifespan of your shingles as well.

When you see these bubbles, it is time to contact your roofing contractor.  You do not want to wait until you see the roof membranes already cracking before you do something about it.  They could lead to more serious problems that require more complicated and more costly solutions like replacing your entire roof!

Blistering can be a problem on any roofing type but is most commonly observed on asphalt shingles.  Solution differs from one roofing type to another but on materials that require adhesive like asphalt, it basically requires cutting out the entire damaged area and having it cleaned before a new layer of adhesive is put down.  However, if the blisters have already multiplied, it may be time for a roof replacement.

How to Prevent Them

Generally, what causes blistering is the heat from the sun and that is something that we have no control over.  Just like any roofing problem, however, there are ways that would help us manage, if not completely prevent them.  We have prepared a short list for you:

  • Correct Installation.  It is imperative to have the materials kept dry prior to roof installation.  Always make sure you hire the right roofing contractor for your roof installation.  You can refer to their previous projects and reviews from previous clients to help you have an understanding on the quality of their work.
  • Proper Ventilation.  You may not be able to do anything about the sun’s heat but you can always control the heat in your attic by making sure that there is sufficient ventilation.
  • Regular Roof Cleaning and Inspection.  Cleaning your roof regularly prevents moisture which causes more extensive damage to your roof, blistering being one of them.  You also need to have your roof inspected on a regular basis, making sure that roof issues are addressed before they turn into more serious trouble.
