What is a Roof Puncture?

Roof punctures come about when pressure and sharp impact hit your roofing materials. This will result in piercing on your roof, providing moisture with passage to more vulnerable parts of your roof system to the inside of your home, causing more damage in the form of leaking

Roof punctures are commonly overlooked since it is less visible compared with other damages on your roof. Nevertheless, however small a roof puncture is, it requires immediate attention before it results in bigger problems.

What Causes a Roof Puncture?

Roof punctures may occur at any time due to a number of reasons which we have categorized into three:

  • People. The most usual cause of roof punctures is foot traffic and this is especially true during the start of spring and summer since roof activities are most common during these seasons.  May it be for regular maintenance, inspection or repair, your roofing materials are put at risk with acquiring punctures as people walk about on your roof.  Aside from the pressure they put on your roof, mindless workers may also cause accidental punctures with their tools.
  • Nature. Strong winds may cause debris, tree branches or even an entire tree to fall on your roof causing punctures.  This will result in serious leaks especially during heavy rains.  Hail is another common cause of roof punctures brought about by nature.  Hail, regardless of its size, presents threat to your roof’s condition.  When you see dents on your gutters caused by hail, it is a clear indication that your roof requires inspection for punctures.
  • Installations / Other Home Improvements.  Drilling holes into your roof during reconfiguration of your HVAC system or relocation of your satellite dish will cause accidental punctures on your roof.  In the same manner, remodeling projects on your home that require workers to access your roof will inadvertently result in punctures.

How to Prevent Roof Punctures?

Although the causes that are brought about by nature cannot be avoided, the rest can be controlled and here is an important reminder:

Always hire professionals.
